rock bottom

The idea of rock bottom is a magical place where change emanates out of necessity. Things cannot get worse so they must get better. Maybe this place exists. But can’t things always get worse? As long as we’re alive, things can get worse. They can get better. The only thing that is not possible is the lack of change itself. Change is inevitable, either for the better or the worse.

Instead, I might offer that rock bottom concept is really a matter of trade offs. Things could get worse, but the cost of doing so is actually greater than getting better. The worse path is more costly than the right path. You cannot keep going down that route unless you still have your destructive behavior.

There are multiple rock bottoms that each of us can choose— indeed, a perfectly rational human would always pay the cost of the beneficial path, because only this path has long term rewards.

Instead humans are messy. We choose our long term destruction daily in sacrifice or short term bliss. We must fight this actively. For an addict, the behaviors have become too easy to even choose anymore. And yet the choice of change is there.

Anyway. Rock bottom is an unnecessary myth. It’s like a perfectly still molecule — it exists in theory, but in practice, had yet to be achieved.

Stop waiting for this rock bottom. If the question is, can it get worse? The answer is always yes. But, choose not to let it.
